The Obihiro no Mori Aquathlon

The Obihiro no Mori Aquathlon is on May 17. Apply by April 17. See the newspaper clipping for more details or ask your questions here. It is a fun event if you can get your swim training in. The pool where I live doesn't usually open until the day after the Aquathlon. The organizers keep it simple and fun and there is a chance to run the course the day before.

This event is the first in the Hokkaido Triathlon Circuit series.

Aquathlon distances

Long:
1500 m swim, 12.7 km run

Middle:
(elementary school and up)
800 m swim, 6.5 km run

Short:
(elementary and junior high school only)
300 m swim, 3 km run

Fee:

5,000 yen
2,000 yen for junior high and under

Second deadline is 4/28, but you will have to pay late fee of 1,500 yen in addition to your participation fee.

Have you run the Hokkaido marathon?

Application for the August 30, Hokkaido Marathon starts April 5th! 
From 8pm on April 5th you can apply for the famous Hokkaido Marathon.
The marathon is known to be a tough marathon because of the heat. Regardless, thousands of runners take the challenge and the opportunity to run through the streets of Sapporo.  If you are a runner in Hokkaido its one of the first questions non-runners and runners alike will ask, "Have you run the Hokkaido marathon?"  Well, have you?

Ohotsuku - Abashiri Marathon

Another full marathon starts in Hokkaido. With a 6 hour time limit, pretty much anyone could finish it. The Ohotsuku - Abashiri Marathon will be held on September 27 (Sun), 2015. Get some new shoes, get some yak-trax, renew your gym membership and let's get that base training started! ('Cause I'm all about that base!) This falls on the weekend before the Betsukai Pilot Marathon, which is convenient for me because there are always a lot of events on the first weekend in October (Ikeda Wine Festival anyone?).

Greetings fellow runners! The 2014 running season is well underway here in Hokkaido.

Race Information

The information provided here on this blog has mostly been gathered from Runnet.  Much has also been taken from the news and the Hokkaido Marathon Guide.  The races are generally posted on the date of the event, not on the date the post was written.  Some may be posted around their application start time and still others may be posted after the event is over.
You can use the information here to help plan your race season in Hokkaido.  If you have any questions about an event, or would like to leave a race report, please do so in the comments of the event.  I screen all comments before they are posted to the blog.

Race Calendar

The calendar has been set up so that events that always repeat on the same date or weekend, repeat every year.  The dates may be wrong.  Use the calendar as a general guide.

Injury

I am sidelined with tendinitis in my left hamstring and am working hard to get it fixed/healed. (Look up high hamstring tendinopathy).
If you want to prevent this happening to you, make sure you stretch (not before your run) and do things other than running.  Especially, make sure you do things to strengthen your rear and your other core muscles.  Sit ups, crunches, planks, twisting crunches, bird dogs, lunges, half lunges, squats, bridges, eccentric bridges, leg abductions, push-ups, pull-ups, knee ups, etc, etc, etc....

I have actually been (not) dealing with this injury for three years and have finally gone to the Dr. and have started rehab.  Thus I have not been running much in the past three years due to the pain and haven't run at all since last November.  This is why Running in Hokkaido has not been updated much.

The Hokkaido Marathon application has started and probably filled up today.  The Shiranuka Road Race 10k is done.  The Date City Half marathon is coming up soon as is the Honbetsu Park 8k Cross Country.  If you like to swim, the Obihiro no Mori Aquathlon is coming up soon in May.  Despite my injury I was able to run the Parent - Child 3k at the Shiranuka Road Race this year.  I was so proud of my little girl.  Check the calendar and Runnet as well. There are many other events in Spring.

The Kogarashi Half Marathon also has 10k and 5k events and 3k and 2k events for children will be held on October 27th at the Nissan Test Track.

There are no cheering crowds, no spectators but there great views and the probably the only chance you'll have of racing around Nissan's Hokkaido test track.  The Half marathon first takes you around the inner circle full of serious hill climbs and then around the outer high-speed circle and back for the finish.  Kogarashi means "cold wind" and likewise the weather is always a bit cool for this race.
