Another Trail Running Event has sprung up.  This time in the Karikachi area.

20k, 10k, 4k trail runs.   3000yen for the 20 and 10k and 1000 for the 4k

Maps on the event site show elevation changes across the course.  Not a very clean map but it serves it's purpose.

Shikaoi Trail Run

This weekend is the Tokachi Trail Running event in Shimizu.  

Also, I just got the application, off of Twitter of all places, for this year's Shikaoi Trail Run.

It's the second running of this event and this year there are three course.  

A 5k, 12k and 23k run.

It is held at the Kawakami Kanko Noen, a sort of touristy farm where you can do horseback riding, strawberry picking and you can eat the fresh dishes at the restaurant there.  

The Shikaoi Trail Run is October 23, 2011.  

Karikachi Summer Road Race

The Karikachi Summer Road Race in Shintoku.

I just got the application for this today in the mail. Very small local race. The short courses are almost entirely on Shintoku's well known grass running course. The one eigth marathon (5.275km) and quarter marathons (10.549km) take you off of the grass course and out onto country roads lined with summer crops of maybe potatoes or sugar beets. Usually the potatoes are in full bloom and their fragrant smell tries to encourage you to slow down and enjoy.

Place: Shintoku Sahoro Riverside Park Golf Course

The grass running course goes around the golf course.

Fee: 2000 yen for high school and above, 1000 yen for junior high school and below.

Run from Biei Shirogane Spa (onsen) to Maruyama Sports and Track and Field Park.

Lots of people cheering you on. The children really help with their cheers on the steep hill. Run down from the spa on a road lined with white birch. Beautiful. Lots of food stalls at the goal and plenty of space in the sports park to relax after the event. Biei itself is surrounded by rolling hills and is a beautiful area.

The Otaru Unga (canal) Road Race takes you along the historic Otaru Canal with views of the ocean and many of the historic old warehouses and bridges with a turnaround at the Otaru Aquarium for the half.

With an elevation change of over 1000m this is a very challenging race. The distance of the 42km run may change slightly depending on the road conditions.  It was 45km in the past, making it an official ultra marathon.

 I just received this information on the Obihiro no Mori Aquathalon.
Here is the application form and the details of the event.  It is a swim and run event (aquathalon).  There is a short, middle and long division with the long division being a 1500m swim and 13km run.

You must put the time that you think you will finish the swim down on the application and they will try to put you in an appropriate group for the swim start.

Shiranuka Road Race Canceled

The Shiranuka Road Race to be held this weekend on March 20th has been canceled. 

Read below: 

★ロードレース大会中止
★３月20日白糠町ロードレース大会の実施を予定していましたが、この度の震災発生により、今後の余震が心配されること、原発事故発生の終息の見通しがつかないこと、さらには、燃料の供給制限も行われ、全道各地からの参加者が安全に安心して参加していただける状況にないと判断しました。関係機関とも協議の上、誠に残念ではありますが、大会を中止することとしました。
★急な事で大変申し訳ありませんが、、皆様のご理解ご協力をいただきまうようよろしくお願いいたします。
★後程、皆様の電話などでも中止のお知らせを行いますが、お仲間の方々にも、お伝え願えれば幸いです。
★皆様から納めていただいた参加料につきましては、お返しすることで準備を進めてまいります。時間を要することと思いますが、しばらくお待ちいただきたくお願い申し上げます。

Because there may yet be aftershocks that would endanger the runners, and also, because fuel is becoming hard to come by, and for other reasons related to this disaster, they have decided to cancel the event.

They will return your participation fee OR, if you choose, you can choose to have the event organizers send the your participation fee to help with relief efforts.   They decided this after a number of participants expressed their desire that they do so.

This was taken from their homepage.  They plan on calling everyone to inform them of the decision.  Perhaps they have already called you?

The Saroma Lake 100km Ultramarathon

One of the most popular and celebrated ultra-marathons in Japan.
Run with close to 5000 others around the beautiful Saroma Lake.

The last Sunday in June.

This is a fantastic event and I can't say enough about it. There are so many people on the course that you are almost never running alone. That alone helps a lot. There is either a water stop or a water and food stop every 2.5km. The support of the other runners and of all the volunteers on the course is phenomenal. This is one of the most famous and well attended ulras in Japan for good reason.

People who have completed this ultra 10 times get preferred treatment. If you are in Japan for the long haul, why not give it a try in 2011 or 2012?
