I went to the Hokusho Road Race this weekend in Hokuryu-cho. The event was very simple. I ran in the 20k. There were two water spots with water only. All distances tarted at the same time. There was no electronic time board and no race chips. After finishing you got another plastic cup of water. No sports drink. No printout of your time. Times were posted on a board. You had to look up the times and write them down in the program you got at registration. There were no age groups. There were 130 men in the 20k and about 30 women in the 20k. 3k, 5k and 10k runners ran on the same course. Runners were not instructed to stay to the left so some runners were running on the right and almost crashed head on into runners who were turning around at the 3k, 5k, and 10k race turn around points. It was hot. 27 degrees C. You ran on town roads that went through fields of sunflowers, buckwheat and rice patties. You got a cheap T-shirt with an elaborate print out on the front for a participation prize.
I was too busy feeding my daughter from food bought at the Tourist Center where the race was held and by time I went to get my time and place of the boards, they had already taken them down. This was at 1pm. The race started at 10am which would leave one to assume that some people would run till at least 12pm. One hour after most everyone finished the organizers had packed up shop and were making their way out of there. A very simply run race with few hands on. They section chief told me he wold send me the results by post. This was the 43rd Hokusho Road Race. On the shirt it says 43th!

There were no kilometer markers until the last 5km and then for every 1km after. So 5k, 4k, 3k, 2k, and 1k left markers. I used those on the way out to check my pace on the first 5k and on the way in to check my pace for the last 5.

Limited information is included in the calendar entries. For more information, leave a comment. I try to post the deadlines for the races. The place where the race is held is also included. You can see where it is by clicking on the map link.
